BRIEF HISTORY

The Bishop of Aizawl, Mons. Stephen Rotlunga invited Fr.Antony Mathias, Provincial, to take up a Mission in his diocese in the year 2011. Accordingly on 9th May 2013 Fr.Provincial, Fr.Marcel Fernandez and Fr.Christopher Fernandez reached the Bishop’s House and they were warmly received by the Bishop and entrusted Khawlailing mission that comes under Serchhip parish(40kms away) to the OCD Fathers of the Vicariate. Fr.Christopher the pioneer of this mission reached Khawlailung on 20th May 2013. This is one of the biggest villages in the constituency, an interior-under-developed village but people are highly civilized with proper education, with proper electricity and proper communication facilities. There are about five hundred houses and about six hundred families in this village. People are poor, no job opportunities, hardly any government job people are there. Total population of the village is around two thousand including school children; between 1500-1600 have their electoral id card. Most of the students are studying outside of the village, due to lack of higher education facilities in the village. People are very generous and at the same time very helpful. In Mizoram above 95% of the population are Christians. And in Khawlailung 100% are Christians practicing different denominations of Christianity. In Khawlailung 80% of the population are Presbyterian, Catholics are 25 families only and rest are Baptist and Protestants. Mizoram is very conducive to stay because the climate is very pleasant, maximum temperature can go up to 30oC.

The mission church was called “the Church of St. Francis of Assisi.” Now named Mount Carmel Church. Then we have St. Francis of Assisi English School (now renamed Mount Carmel School) started in 1993. Now it has come to 8th standard with 144 students.
