BRIEF HISTORY
From the year 2008 the vicariate made efforts to send missionaries into the fertile land of Arunachal Pradesh. The intention was presented to the newly formed diocese of Miao which wholeheartedly welcomed the Carmelite presence in the diocese. As a result Fr. Jess was sent to the bishop’s house on 18th March 2009 who stayed a month in the bishop’s house to look for the possible areas of intervention. When the bishop George PK offered a place named Empen to start the work by the Carmelite missionaries, Fr. Jess moved to the new place to begin his work. He stayed with forest guards in their quarters and served the villages for their pastoral needs. He had to walk 5 to 6 hours to reach the nearest catholic village. …… Meanwhile, when it became very clear that Empen could not be used as a place for the missionary activities by the Catholics due to the opposition by the Chakmas, the bishop offered another parish named Kumari in the district of Lohit which has a school, hostel, and seven substations. Fr. Jess and Fr. Tony, on behalf of the vicariate took over the running of the school and parish on 15th of February 2010 in presence of Bishop George, the bishop of Miao. A new hostel building was inaugurated on 2nd June 2014 and the school has around 450 students. The parish has 337 families and 8 village churches under their care.
